Peter Thiel Talks Bitcoin: A Holder With Cautious Optimism
Peter Thiel, the renowned billionaire and co-founder of Paypal, Palantir Technologies, and Founders Fund, shared his thoughts on bitcoin (BTC) during an interview with CNBC. Thiel’s familiarity with bitcoin dates back to 2014 when Founders Fund became one of the earliest institutional investors in the cryptocurrency, making significant acquisitions of BTC.
The fund later sold its bitcoin holdings before the 2022 crypto market downturn, reaping approximately $1.8 billion in profits. Reports from 2023 indicate that the fund resumed purchasing crypto assets, including bitcoin, from late summer to early fall of 2023. Thiel only discussed his personal bitcoin holdings on CNBC.
“I still hold some,” Thiel explained to the show host at the Aspen Ideas Festival. “I didn’t buy as much as I should have,” the billionaire investor acknowledged. However, Thiel is significantly more cautious compared to the average bitcoin enthusiast. “I’m not sure it’s going to go up that dramatically from here,” the venture capitalist stated.
